Where to start your Uluru itinerary

If you’re travelling with a family, the easiest way to explore Uluru is flying into Yulara. This quaint tourist town is the closest place to stay near Uluru, so it’s worth flying straight here. You can find direct flights to the airport in Yulara (Ayers Rock/Connellan Airport) from most major cities around Australia.

You can also fly in and out of Alice Springs, but you’ll need to travel about 5 hours to Uluru from there. So this option would add some extra travel time, which may not be ideal if you have young kids. Once you’ve made it to Yulara, use this town as a base for the next 4 days of activities around Uluru!

Day 1 - Uluru Cultural Centre and Walks

Uluru Cultural Centre

The Uluru Cultural Centre is the perfect place to start your itinerary. This interactive centre has lots of exhibits and activities where people of all ages can engage with the community, history, and nature of Uluru.

Learn about the traditions of the local Anangu People, the traditional owners of the land. Visit the incredible Aboriginal art galleries and explore the Tjukurpa Tunnel to hear the local creation stories. There is also a cafe, souvenir shop, and picnic tables where you can relax, fuel up for the day, and admire the views of Uluru.

Uluru Walks

Spend the rest of the afternoon taking on one of the walking trails around Uluru! The Uluru Base Walk is quite a trek at 10km long, so if you have young kids you can just walk smaller sections of the famous trail. Or you can stroll along the Mala Walk, a 2km, kid-friendly trail with gorgeous views of Uluru and the Indigenous rock art.

Most Uluru walks can be done as a self-guided activity, or you can join a guided walk with a park ranger to get expert knowledge about the trail and its significance.

Day 2 - Uluru Sunrise and Camel Ride

Sunrise at Uluru

Don’t miss the chance to watch the sunrise over Uluru! This is a really special experience that the whole family will cherish. Some young kids may not want to wake up early for sunrise, but if you can convince them to give it a try, the breathtaking views will be worth it!

There are five main spots in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park that have the best sunrise views. Talinguru Nyakunytjaku is the most popular sunrise spot at Uluru that has spacious platforms with unobstructed views of the morning glow over the famous monolith

Camel Ride

Head back into Yulara and continue the family fun with a camel ride! Australia’s Outback is known for its abundance of camels, and Uluru Camel Farm at Ayer's Rock Resort offers family-friendly camel tours. The minimum age for riding a camel is 5 years, and kids may also need to meet height requirements to be allowed to ride. If everyone is old enough and tall enough, you can enjoy a memorable camel ride through the heart of the Red Centre.

Day 3 - Explore Kata Tjuta

Spend day 3 exploring the magnificent natural domes of Kata Tjuta. Here you can immerse yourself in some of the Outback’s most pristine and sacred scenery, with various lookouts and walks providing amazing views.

The Walpa Gorge Walk is a great option for families. It’s a one-hour walk that covers around 2.6km and is considered moderate in terms of difficulty. Walpa Gorge is full of thriving flora and fauna, so this is the perfect place to admire the wildlife of the desert.

The Valley of the Winds Walk is 7.4km and takes around 4 hours to complete. So this option may be less suitable for young kids, but it’s an amazing option for fit and adventerous families!

Day 4 - Culture and Art Experiences and an Evening Light Show

After 3 days of incredible experiences around Uluru, take your final day to try some of the fun, family-friendly activities at Ayers Rock Resort in Yulara. There are so many cool things to do here, most of which are suitable for kids of all ages. Just be sure to check age restrictions before booking any specific tours or activities as some things do have age limits.

Ayers Rock Resort Experiences

Whether you’re staying at Ayers Rock Resort or not, head here to participate in some fun, educational activities. You can join a Bush Yarns Talk about Aboriginal traditions and techniques, a Didgeridoo Workshop, or a Bush Food Experience to discover native bush foods and how to prepare them.

Test your creative skills at an Aboriginal Dot Painting Workshop, or treat your family to something extravagant like a scenic flight over Uluru. Whatever your interests are, Ayers Rock Resort has lots of experiences that are fun for everyone.

Evening Light Show

A must-do while visiting Uluru is one of the evening light shows. There are several to choose from, with Uluru’s Field of Light being the most famous. This massive light installation in the Outback showcases artistic brilliance, and your ticket includes admission plus round-trip transport from hotels. Field of Light is suitable for all ages!

Wintjiri Wiru is another popular experience after dark, where the light installations tell important cultural stories in the local Pitjantjatjara language. This option is suitable for anyone ages 5 and above, and it includes Australian cheese, dessert, and wine.

Where To Stay Near Uluru As A Family

When visiting Uluru as a family, the best place to stay is in Yulara. This small township is about 20km from Uluru and has plenty of accommodation options to suit travellers of all ages and budget ranges. You can find famous hotels like Ayers Rock Resort, humble lodges and motels, and campgrounds. The nicer hotels and lodges may offer transportation around the area as well, which saves you having to rent a car or drive your own car to the Outback.

There is nowhere to stay in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park itself, as it’s a protected area. So staying in Yulara is the closest you can get to the natural attractions here.
