Time to go diving!
Once the vessel anchors, it’s time to put on your wetsuit and the rest of your swim gear and get ready to go diving! Groups of up to eight people can enter the spacious cage at a time, leaving lots of room to spread out and watch the Great Whites up close.
While you’re waiting for your turn in the cage, take advantage of the viewing opportunities on board the vessel! During diving breaks, feast on a buffet lunch, afternoon tea, and enjoy refreshing teas, coffees, and filtered waters.
Head back to the marina
On the way back, enjoy a beer or a glass of bubbly to celebrate your successful thrill-seeking adventure as the boat opens up its bar. Since shark cage diving can differ every day depending on weather conditions and shark activity.
Every effort will be made by the crew to ensure the guests get a Great White sighting - even if it means staying a little later. This means that return times are subject to change, though generally the vessel returns to the marina between 6pm and 9pm.

Calypso Star Charters is the only one-day tour operator in Cairns that offers a ‘No Shark Policy’ whereby customers receive a discount on their next trip if sharks are not seen on the day of their tour.
The operator cannot guarantee seeing a shark, nor can they restrict the sharks in any way to stay put. Rather, they can do our utmost, within specified guidelines, to entice them to the vessel. If a Great White Shark is not sighted throughout the day, customers will receive $300 voucher to use towards another charter with Calypso Star Charters. If you do choose to use the voucher towards their ‘Swim with the Sea Lion’ tour the difference in the ticket amount is forfeited.
These vouchers cannot be exchanged for a refund or redeemable for cash. If after your second or subsequent attempts you still do not sight sharks you are given a voucher to return for $100 all inclusive. Proof of identity will be required when redeeming the voucher.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be guaranteed to see a shark?
While Calypso Star Charters will do their best to entice sharks to the vessel during a tour, they cannot guarantee a shark sighting.
If your tour doesn’t spot a Great White Shark throughout the day, customers will receive a $300 voucher to use towards another charter with Calypso Star Charters.
These vouchers cannot be exchanged for a refund or redeemed for cash. Proof of identity will be required when redeeming the voucher. Calypso publicises all current and historic shark sightings. Their average daily success rate since January 1 2011 is 80%.
Is there an age restriction for this tour?
There is no age limit to board Calypso Star Charters vessels. However, there are additional restrictions for those under the age of 18.
Child prices are for those aged 16 and under.
Children under the age of 8 may only enter the water at the Skipper’s discretion on the day.
Children under the age of 16 must be under adult supervision at all times. If a child aged 16 or under goes in the water, their supervising adult must also enter the water.
If a child aged 16 or under leaves the water, their supervising adult must do the same.
Any guest under the age of 18 must have their waiver form signed by a parent or guardian.
I don't have an underwater camera. What are my options?
Calypso Star Charters offers a ‘Highlights Photo Pack’ which is a USB full of photos from the day’s events, including underwater still shots if a crew member jumps into the cage, and the operator’s extensive photo library. Alternatively, GoPros are available to hire.
What is the visibility like while diving?
The water clarity at the Neptune Islands Marine Park is typically very good. While rougher weather tends to reduce visibility, it’s rare for visibility to drop below 15 metres. Calypso Star Charters has a number of dive sites around Neptune Islands, which allows crew to select the clearest water and best shark action possible on any given day.
Will I be cold when I dive?
The water temperature around the Neptune Islands is quite stable. It can vary between 18-20C in summer and 14C at the end of winter.
Calypso Star charters provide 7mm wetsuits, booties, and hoods year-round to keep you toasty!
Plus, the vessel comes fitted with hot showers for after your cage dive.
Can my dietary requirements be catered for?
If the crew are advised of them at the time of booking, dietary requirements can be catered for on this tour.
Is there a spectator price?
The price for this tour is the same for all guests when a shark is sighted. Everyone on board will be offered an opportunity to view the shark, either from the cage or from on board the vessel. Guests are encouraged to try a dive in the cage for the best views, but also reminded to respect the wishes of those who prefer to watch from the boat.
Can I do a shark dive if I don’t have a diving qualification?
Yes! You don’t need any diving qualification or any previous experience to do a shark dive.
That’s because this tour is a ‘surface dive’ which won’t go more than 2-4 feet beneath the water’s surface.
A full briefing will be given before diving and practice on the surface is available if required. The crew are all experienced divers and veterans of the shark cage who are more than willing to help first time divers.
Can I do a shark dive if I am not a strong swimmer?
Yes! Swimming ability isn’t necessary in a shark cage dive, as divers will be weighted to counter the buoyancy of the wetsuit, and can simply stand in the cage with the water level just 30-45cm above their heads. Moderate fitness levels are required for entry/exit from the cage via the ladder.
Viewing from the surface from onboard the vessel is also an option for nervous swimmers.
Can I do the dive if I am pregnant?
Calypso Star Charters request that pregnant guests speak to their doctor regarding whether or not they should join the tour. Doctors should be informed that guests who partake in the cage dive will be diving about 50cm below the surface. If your doctor is happy for you to come on board, so are the operators!
Can I do the dive if I have asthma?
The operators request that those with asthma speak to a doctor regarding whether or not they should join the tour or partake in the dive, and let them know you will be diving 50cm below the surface. Be mindful that it is very easy to surface from the cage and exit at any time.
