This 10-day trip takes you across the sparse and spectacular deserts of the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Day 1: Darwin to Nitmiluk National Park

  • Total driving time: 4.5 hours
  • Total walking distance: 2 km

After meeting your tour guide and fellow travellers in Darwin, the journey begins! Board the comfortable 4WD bus and head over to the stunning area of Katherine, a gem of the Top End. Swim in Edith Falls and explore the massive canyon walls of Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park. You’ll spend the night camping in swags amidst the wilderness of the national park.

Day 2: Nitmiluk to Lake Argyle

  • Total driving time: 7.5 hours
  • Total walking distance: 1 km

Have a relaxing morning in Nitmiluk National Park, complete with breakfast and a swim in Katherine Hot Springs. Next, the group will travel to Lake Argyle. This wide expanse of freshwater is created by the Ord River Dam. Though it’s a man-made lake, it’s home to many native species including fish and freshwater crocodiles. Join an optional sunset cruise and nestle into the exclusive riverside campsite. 


Day 3 & 4: Purnululu National Park

  • Total driving time for the 2 days: 7.5 hours
  • Total walking distance for the 2 days: 10 km

Days 3 and 4 will be spent exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Bungle Bungles in Purnululu National Park. These impressive sandstone karsts tower above the remote grasslands below, making for mindblowing views. Over the next 2 days, you’ll embark on some challenging yet rewarding walks, including a trek into Echidna Chasm and up to Cathedral Gorge. You’ll have the chance to add on an optional scenic flight over the Bungle Bungles, and for both nights the group will camp in swags under the vast Outback starry sky.

Day 5 & 6 - Emma Gorge and the Kimberley

  • Total driving time for the 2 days: 5 hours and 45 minutes
  • Total walking distance for the 2 days: 8 km

Today you’ll continue the journey towards Broome. Admire the rugged views of the East Kimberley Region as the 4WD makes its way towards El Questro Station. Tackle the hike into Emma Gorge where you will find a majestic waterfall and a refreshing swimming hole. 

On day 6 you’ll explore Kunnunurra, the main city in East Kimberley. Check out the local distillery, and enjoy a beautiful walk in Mirima National Park. In the late afternoon, walk up to an epic lookout over the Upper Ord River system and watch the sunset. Both nights you’ll be camping at an exclusive campsite on the Ord River.


Day 7 & 8 - Gibb River Road and Manning Gorge

  • Total driving time for the 2 days: 7 hours
  • Total walking distance for the 2 days: 8 km

Depart your peaceful campsite on the Ord River and hit the legendary Gibb River Road as you continue to traverse the Magnificent Kimberly region. Spend the night camping near a crystal clear river at Mount Barnett, and wake up on day 8 to hike through Manning Gorge. Feast your eyes on the otherworldly landscapes and swim in the pristine Manning Falls before checking out Galvan’s Gorge and settling into your campsite for the night.

Day 9 - Bells Gorge

  • Total driving time: 4.5 hours
  • Total walking distance: 4-6 km

The adventure continues as you head into the Western Kimberley region. This part of the Outback is known for its abundance of jaw-dropping gorges that showcase the power of nature. Today you’ll get to explore Bell Gorge and Windjana Gorge, where you can admire the ancient landscape and spot native wildlife. It’s your last night of camping as well, so cherish every moment of this remote Outback adventure in the Western Kimberleys. 


Day 10 - Arrive in Broome

  • Total driving time: 6 hours
  • Total walking distance: 4 km

Drive through the last leg of the Outback with your tour group! You’ll have the chance to stop and take a guided walk through Tunnel Creek, a vast cave system that extends far underground. After witnessing this mysterious cave full of stalactites, finish off the trip with a drive to Broome. Arrive in the quaint seaside town and enjoy a marvellous sunset over the Indian Ocean on the famous Cable Beach.

What level of fitness is required for this tour?

This adventure requires a high level of fitness! There is lots of walking and hiking outside in the heat. Some hikes involve climbing over rocks or wading through water. Chat with us if you're unsure whether this tour is right for you or not. 

What is the accommodation like?

You’ll be camping at Outback campgrounds in either swags or tents. Facilities can be very basic, but it’s all part of the adventure! You'll need a sleeping bag, so either bring your own or enquire about purchasing one for $75.

Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts in Darwin on Day 1 at 6.30 am and finishes in Broome on Day 10 in the afternoon. Onward travel needs to be booked for the following day after the tour finishes.

How much luggage can we bring?

We recommend you pack as lightly as possible and make sure that you are able to carry and lift your own luggage and walk with it for short distances. Most travellers use a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would also work if you travel lightly.

What are the temperatures like in this part of the Outback?

Temperatures in the Top End and Western Australia are extreme. During the day the weather can be hot with very strong sun, so please bring appropriate clothing and sun protection. In the evenings, temperatures drop significantly, so ensure you have base layers and warm clothing to stay comfortable.

Are there any age restrictions?

Anyone ages 12-80 can book this tour! Just remember it is a very remote Outback adventure and you need a high level of fitness. It is not recommended for those with limited mobility.
