Day 1 - Travel from Darwin to Arnhem Land

Depart from Darwin bright and early at 6am and head East along the Arnhem Highway towards the Corroboree Billabong on the Mary River. Join an educational river cruise of the wetlands and try to spot local birds and saltwater crocodiles!

Then continue to the border of Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land, where the 4WD will cross the croc-infested river at Cahill’s Crossing. Spend the rest of the day on Arnhem Land learning about the area’s cultural significance, visiting treasured First Nations sites, and hearing about indigenous history from your Bininj guide. Then camp in Kakadu National Park for the night.

Day 2 - Explore Kakadu National Park

  • Total walking time: 2.5 hours
  • Total driving time: 4 hours
  • Optional activity: Scenic flight over Kakadu National Park

Today you’ll experience some highlights of the world-famous Kakadu National Park! The first half of the day consists of a challenging hike through mystical forests followed by a gorgeous swim at Jim Jim Falls. After lunch you’ll visit Anbangbang, an important cultural site with fascinating rock art that is managed by the Mirarr and Djok communities. In the afternoon you can visit Bowali Cultural Centre or book an optional scenic flight over the national park.  


Day 3 - Swimming holes in Kakadu and travel to Nitmiluk National Park

  • Total walking time: 1.5 hours
  • Total driving time: 5.5 hours

Continue to explore the vast wilderness of Kakadu with a morning swim in either Gunlom Falls or Maguk (Barramundi Gorge). Then it’s time to move on to another stunning location in Australia’s Top End! Depart Kakadu, stop in the historic gold-mining town of Pine Creek for lunch, and enter Nitmiluk National Park for dinner and a cosy night camping under the stars.

Day 4 - Discover Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge)

  • Optional activity: Katherine Gorge Scenic Cruise

Nitmiluk National Park, previously called Katherine Gorge National Park, is another gem of the Northern Territory that is filled with natural beauty, wildlife and cultural sites. Join an optional Katherine Gorge Scenic Cruise if you wish, or explore the area with the group on foot. Spend the afternoon walking to the majestic Edith Falls for a refreshing dip, then camp for the night on the edge of Litchfield National Park. 


Day 5 - Tour Litchfield National Park and return to Darwin 

  • Total walking time: 1 hour
  • Total driving time: 3.5 hours

Today you’ll tour the highlights of the lush Litchfield National Park. Depending on the park’s weather conditions, you’ll visit either Florence Falls, Wangi Falls or Bluey Rockhole. Each of these locations is a magical oasis in the Outback where you can swim, relax and get epic photos. After a day of walking, swimming, and exploring, hop back in the 4WD and return to Darwin!

What is the weather like in the Top End?

You’ll want to check the weather right before your tour for more accurate weather conditions, but the Top End has a desert climate. That means hot days with strong sun, so packing enough water and sun protection is vital! During the evenings the temperatures are mild and you may want a light jacket. 

What fitness level is required for this tour?

This trip requires a moderate level of fitness as there are a few walking trails involved. Each trail varies in length and difficulty, but walking times range from 1 to 3.5 hours per day. Please bring sturdy, comfortable walking shoes and comfortable clothing. 

What is the accommodation like?

You’ll be sleeping at Outback campgrounds with basic shared facilities. It’s important to bring a sleeping bag or hire one before the trip! You’ll also need to pitch in with preparing meals and cleaning, as it is a communal effort on this tour!

Is there a minimum age for this tour?

The minimum age is 12 years. 

Are hotel pick-ups in Darwin offered?

Yes, but you will need to contact us with your preferred pick up point at least one week before departure. Otherwise, the default pick-up location is the Cavenagh Motel at 6:30am (12 Cavenagh St).

Can my dietary requirements be catered for?

Yes, diets such as vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free can be catered for. Passengers with special meal requirements or food allergies MUST ensure they or their travel agent inform ATA of this when booking. Food for the trip is purchased in advance and special requirements cannot be catered for after departing. 

What type of clothes should we pack for the Top End?

Lightweight, active clothing is ideal for the Top End. Bring a mixture of layers, as the temperatures can be hot but long pants and shirts can protect against the sun. You may want some warm clothes for the nighttime as well. 

How much luggage can we bring?

You are only allowed to bring a soft bag with a strict limit of 10kg. Any excess luggage must be stored in Darwin. Most accommodations will offer luggage storage!

  • This trip requires a moderate level of fitness as there are a variety of walking trails. Guests should be prepared to hike 5-9kms per day. 
  • Please notify us upon booking if there are any dietary requirements. Food is prepared in advance and special diets cannot be catered for unless you tell us in advance. 
  • Itineraries may change due to weather, local conditions, transport schedules, public holidays, or other factors outside of our control.

Cancellations

All cancellations forfeit 25% of the recommended retail price (RRP) - not the discounted/sale price. No shows or client cancellations made within 60 days of departure forfeit 100% of the total ticket price.

A refund in the event of cancellation is subject to both our Cancellation Policy and the terms of the supplier.
